The Letter to the Confidant
“Dear Career Confidant,
Today, I crashed. Hard.
I was up at 6:30 a.m., driving to Cambridge, pushing my mind and body to meet the day. But by 1 p.m., a sudden wave of exhaustion hit me that felt like a total betrayal. My internal voice started screaming at me to “push through,” wrapping me in a heavy blanket of guilt because I dared to slow down while the clock was still ticking.
I feel like I’m failing a test that everyone else is passing. I’ve lived by the 9-to-5 rules my whole life, but I’m realizing that this rhythm is breaking me. How do I stop the burnout when society tells me that resting is a sin?”
— An Exhausted Employee
The Response: A Blueprint for the Human Rhythm
My Dear Friend,
That “betrayal” you felt at 1 p.m. wasn’t your body failing you; it was your body finally telling you the truth.
The 9-to-5 is not a biological law—it is a legacy system designed for a different era. It treats humans like machines, ignoring that we are each built with a unique architectural blueprint. When you crash, it isn’t a lack of discipline; it is the friction between your soul and a rigid, outdated model.
Here is how we dismantle the “Rat Race” and rebuild your sovereignty:
1. The 3-Hour Truth
Scientific research suggests that humans are truly productive for only about three to four focused hours a day. The rest of the 8-hour shift is often “performative labor”—wasted time that fuels frustration and chronic burnout. Stop judging your worth by an 8-hour clock that was never designed for human creativity.
2. Honor Your Flow (The Power of the Break)
When the crash hits, fighting it is like driving a car on an empty tank.
The Strategy: When I felt that crash today, I stopped fighting. I took a 5 p.m. walk and refueled. Because I listened, my energy returned naturally later in the evening, allowing me to handle my email marketing with clarity.
The Action: When exhaustion hits, pause immediately. A 15-minute walk or closing your eyes isn’t “laziness”—it is essential maintenance.
3. Challenge the Legacy Guilt
The guilt you feel is an old, ingrained “software” drilled into us by a society that demands compliance. You must consciously rewrite the code.
Your New Mantra: “I am not a robot. I will produce better work when I am rested than when I am forced.”
4. Prioritise Your Non-Negotiables
In survival mode, your victory isn’t found in your to-do list. It’s found in your foundation.
The Blueprint: Tonight, your “win” is nine hours of sleep. Tomorrow, it is a nourishing breakfast. Protect these basics with the same ferocity you used to protect your corporate deadlines.
The Confidante’s Verdict: You are not alone, and you are not failing. You listened to your body, you adapted, and you survived. In the architecture of a sovereign life, that is a profound success.
Be merciful to your rhythm.

Title: The Human Rhythm
About this Piece: Spoken Word for the Survival Struggle
I wrote this because we are being gaslit by a 9-to-5 clock that doesn’t account for the human soul.
The road to Cambridge started with the dawn,
A 6:30 engine and a stifled yawn.
I wore the “professional,” I played the part,
Until the exhaustion broke open my heart.
By one in the afternoon, the systems went grey,
A sudden betrayal in the heat of the day.
The crash wasn’t quiet; it was heavy and deep,
A debt to my body I tried not to keep.
We’re measured by hours, by a clock on the wall,
As if being “on” is a mandate for all.
But three hours of focus is the peak of our span,
The rest is just theatre—a desperate plan.
The 9-to-5 model is a suit that won’t fit,
A capitalist lie where we’re forced to sit,
Chasing a ghost that rewards only time,
While ignoring the mountains we’re actually trying to climb.
Then comes the Guilt, that familiar weight,
The Phantom Boss standing guard at the gate.
He whispers of failure, of “lazy” and “slow,”
While your battery’s empty and your spirit is low.
But you aren’t an appliance to plug in a base,
A machine with no soul and a fixed, metal face.
You are a human, with blood and with bone,
With a rhythm and timing that’s strictly your own.
So I walked at five, through the air and the trees,
I traded the “shoulds” for a bit of a breeze.
I let the tide out, as all oceans must do,
To wait for the current to start something new.
By eight, I was back, with a focus so clear,
Because I stopped fighting the thing I should fear.
I honored the ebb so the flow could return,
A lesson in fire that I’ve had to burn.
Tonight is for nine hours of deep, silent rest,
To heal from the survival that put me to test.
The Human Rhythm is the only true way
To own your tomorrow and reclaim today.
You are not a failure for needing to pause;
You’re just living outside of a broken law.
This poem is the “Unedited Draft” of a Tuesday in Cambridgeshire where my body simply ran out of road. We are taught that if we aren’t “on” for eight hours straight, we are failing. We are taught to listen to the Phantom Boss—that internalised voice of corporate guilt—instead of our own biological “check-engine” light.
The 9-to-5 isn’t a standard; it’s a suit that doesn’t fit.
Research tells us we have about three hours of true, deep focus in us per day. The rest is performance. The rest is theatre. This spoken word piece is my refusal to perform. It is a reclamation of the Ebb and the Flow. I am vocalizing this survival struggle because if we don’t start talking about the “crash” at 1:00 PM, we will keep burning out in silence.
This isn’t just poetry. It’s my therapy. It’s a reminder that you are a human battery, not a wall socket. You don’t need to apologise for needing to recharge.
