In my role as a Business Consultant and Careers Adviser, I receive many messages from people who are doing their best but feel completely drained by the search. Recently, a customer sent me a heartfelt email about the toll that job-hunting and past workplace stress has taken on them. With their permission—and with names and details changed for privacy—I wanted to share our exchange. If you feel like you are just “surviving” right now, this is for you.
The Inbox: “I’m tired of just surviving—how do I find a job that actually fits?”
“Dear Career Confidante,
I’m writing to you because I feel like I’ve hit a wall. I’ve been looking for work for a while now, and honestly? I’m exhausted. Every morning I wake up and tell myself today is the day, but then I look at the job boards and my heart just sinks. I feel like I’m supposed to just take ‘anything’ because I need the money and the security, but the thought of going into another high-stress, disorganised workplace makes me want to stay in bed.
I’ve had jobs before where I wasn’t valued, where the management was a mess, and where I felt like just a cog in a machine. I don’t want that anymore. I want to feel like ‘someone’ again. But I don’t even know what I want—I just know I want peace and a job that doesn’t take a toll on my mental health.
Am I being unrealistic? Is there actually a next stage, or am I stuck in this survival cycle forever?
I really hope you can help.”
To the Soul Who is Tired of “Just Surviving,”
First, I want you to take a deep breath. You aren’t “difficult” or “unrealistic” for wanting a job that doesn’t break you. In fact, that feeling of exhaustion you’re describing? That’s your inner wisdom telling you that you were made for more than just “getting by.”
When we stay in Survival Mode for too long, our world gets very small. We start to believe that our only choice is between “stressful work” or “no work.” But there is a next stage. Here is what it looks like and how we get you there:
1. Shift from “What can I get?” to “What do I need?”
When we are stressed, we tend to grab at anything. But if you’ve spent years in jobs that undervalued you, “anything” is often a trap. The next stage starts when you give yourself permission to set some boundaries.
The Survival Stage: “I’ll take any job that pays the bills, even if it makes me ill.”
The Next Stage: “I need a role where the tasks are clear, the environment is steady, and my contribution is seen.”
2. Recognising Your “Hidden” Calibre
You might feel like “just another job seeker,” but you have a history of resilience that is a massive asset. Whether you’ve raised a family, navigated difficult life challenges, or managed a household, you have developed high-level skills in problem-solving and endurance. The right employer isn’t looking for a “perfect” CV; they are looking for a person who can handle reality. Your life experience is your expertise.
3. Finding Your “Peace”
You mentioned wanting peace. In the career world, peace comes from Alignment. It’s that feeling when what you are good at matches what you are actually doing.
To find this, we stop looking only at job titles and start looking at Work-Life Balance. * We look for cultures that value efficiency over “busywork.”
We look for roles that allow you to switch off at the end of the day so you can actually enjoy your life.
4. Moving Out of the “Freeze”
When you feel stuck and hopeless, it’s often because you’re looking at the mountain instead of the first step. You don’t need to have your whole life figured out today. You just need to know what you want the next chapter to feel like. You are allowed to move at a pace that protects your health.
My Advice to You:
Stop applying for roles that make your stomach churn just by reading the description. Let’s sit down and look at what makes you feel capable and calm. You are a high-value person, even if you don’t feel like it right now. You are not “stuck”; you are just in a transition period between a difficult past and a sustainable future.
The next stage isn’t about working harder; it’s about working in a way that respects who you are.
I’m here when you’re ready to take that first step.
