We spend so much of our lives letting our past beliefs dictate our present value. We clock into jobs that drain us, accept a low income because we don’t want to rock the boat, and work ourselves into exhaustion without ever stopping to ask: Is this actually bringing me joy?
For the longest time, I thought confidence was a finite resource reserved for other people. I believed self-belief was something you finally unlocked only after you achieved the milestones, earned the credentials, or received external applause.
Then comes the cold, hard realisation that alters everything: At some point, you wake up and realise no one truly believes in you the way you need them to. Not because they are evil, but because they are trapped in their own limitations. They look at you through the lens of who you used to be, or worse, through the filter of their own fears.
And right alongside that realisation comes another, even sharper truth: Life is short.
The truth is much more demanding: Self-belief is not a feeling. It is a practice. It is the decision to back yourself when the room is empty, your family is laughing at your ambition, and the path is entirely unlit. When nobody else believes in you, your only option is to become your own belief system.
The WhatsApp Chat That Broke the Matrix
Recently, during a chaotic, hilarious WhatsApp chat with my sister, something shifted. Not a small shift—a psychological earthquake.
My dad, bless him, has a habit of ranking us like contestants on a poverty game show (apparently I’m “third in line,” the poorest). Then my sister interrupted; she needed a party. I said, “YES we do!”
It instantly reframed everything. Rather than letting the trigger pull me down, I realised that joy is medicine. Joy is healing. Joy is a reminder that life isn’t only bills, responsibilities, and expectations. Sometimes you need to live like we’re kids again. Watching her enjoy life reminded me that healing isn’t just quiet reflection. Healing is dancing. Healing is laughing. Healing is living.
This is a woman who has been going through a tough time for years, and she was not letting anything or anyone keep her down. Life is too short to wait for permission to be happy.
That chat forced a total reframing of how we see our time, our energy, our boundaries, and our worth. If you’re feeling stuck, undervalued, or like you’re living a life that’s too small for the person you’re becoming, here is the blueprint that changed everything for us.
1. Stop Worrying About the How—Focus on the What
Most people build their lives backwards. They look at what’s available, what’s “realistic,” what’s being offered—and then shrink their dreams to fit inside those limits, usually because everyone around them tells them to be “sensible.”
The most successful people don’t start with the job. They start with the lifestyle.
During that same mindset shift, I stopped looking at what was “reasonable” and laid out what I actually wanted:
Three days a week.
Three hours a day.
£45–50k minimum.
Total flexibility.
VIP time only.
And suddenly, my brain stopped panicking about how and started showing me what I already have to make it possible. Your brain is a problem-solving machine. Give it a clear target, and it will build the bridge.
2. You Are a High-Value Asset (The Starbucks Rule)
When people laugh at your goals—or when your family ranks you on a poverty game show—it’s easy to let it dent your confidence. But here’s the truth: Your value is not determined by who can afford you, and it is certainly not defined by people who refuse to see your worth.
Think about Starbucks. Some people think it’s too expensive. That doesn’t mean the coffee isn’t worth it; it just means those people aren’t the target market.
Your skills, your integrity, your lived experience—these are premium. If someone doesn’t want to pay your rate, that’s fine. Someone else will.
3. Work With Your Brain, Not Against It
For years, we force ourselves into jobs that drain us because we don’t understand our own minds: ADHD, burnout, trauma, emotional overload, masking, people-pleasing.
When you realise nobody is coming to rescue you from your own burnout, you have to save yourself. Understanding your psychology is the ultimate cheat code. You don’t need “crazy work” to be successful; you need aligned work. Look at what used to bring you joy—creativity, ideas, freedom—and build a support system around yourself (always remembering that collaboration means everyone gets paid fairly in your world). Stay in your zone of genius.
4. Turn Your Pain Into Blueprints
Everything you survived is someone else’s current crisis.
Toxic relationships? You’re now a boundaries expert.
A messy breakup or transition? You’re a healing specialist.
Starting ventures with zero capital? You have a blueprint people would pay for.
Women backed into corners become creative because they have to. But when you tap into that same creativity out of self-love instead of sheer survival? You become unstoppable.
The Return of the Woman You Used to Love
My mum is praying for me. My sister is cheering for me. But at the end of the day, I want what I want, and I need to stand strong and forget everyone else.
For too long, we wait around for an RSVP to our own lives, waiting for people to clap for a vision they are too small to even see. No more.
I am finally stepping back into the version of myself I used to adore: the creative one, the visionary, the leader, the person who actually believes in herself—even when no one else in the room does.
This is my comeback. This is my joy. Life is too short to spend it shrinking to fit other people’s comfort zones. Even if I make no money tomorrow, I’ll still be having the time of my life because I refuse to live small.
Final Thought
Real self-belief isn’t a loud, chest-thumping performance. Most days, it looks remarkably ordinary: starting before you’re ready, protecting your energy, and unlearning the need for consensus.
We were raised to survive, not thrive. To accept, not demand. To work hard, not smart.
But your past self—and the people who doubted you—do not get to decide your future worth. Stand strong, drop the weight of other people’s opinions, and put the highest value on yourself starting today. Wear the clothes, take the holidays, protect your peace, and build the life you actually want.
You were made for a purpose—and that purpose is not exhaustion.
