Dear Career Confidante,
April 6th was the day I stopped trying to fit into the box and started drawing a map of the cage.
I am a butterfly. That isn’t some flowery, poetic metaphor; it is a clinical observation of a brain that was built for high-altitude strategy, global communication, and complex systems. I have managed 12 projects for global brands like VW Group. I have been featured in the BBC and the Huffington Post. I have a marketing degree and a history of turning "nothing" into "community."
And yet, for the last two years, I have been sitting in a sterile office in Luton, taking home £1,690 a month, being told I need an apprenticeship qualification to prove I’m a "specialist."
“This apprenticeship takes more than it gives me.”
That was the line in my journal that broke the spell. For months, I’ve been "fuming." Not just because of the workload, but because of the moral injury of a system that sees a human being with safeguarding risks and only cares about getting them a "Tesco job" to hit a target.
The 12/10 Performance in a 5/10 World
If you have ADHD or C-PTSD, you know the feeling of being "too much" for a stagnant workplace. I wrote it down in black and white: "I am an 12/10." When you are a 12/10 working in a 5/10 system, the system doesn't reward you. It actually ignores you to protect its own peace. My manager "doesn't understand" because I am speaking the language of a Senior Architect and they are speaking the language of a bureaucrat.
I’ve been picking up management’s slack, filling "illegal gaps," and over-functioning until I collapse on the sofa at night, too exhausted to even brush my teeth. That isn't "laziness." As the books I'm reading remind me: Laziness is a lie. It’s a nervous system shutdown from trying to shrink a Ferrari engine into a lawnmower frame.
The Shackle and the Open Door
On a Tuesday morning, I had a breakthrough that felt like a physical weight leaving my chest. I realized that to get outside, I must first get inside—I must work on my roots to finally come up for air.
I had been telling myself I just wanted the £2.5k salary, but the truth is deeper: I have skills and talent that are a gift, and it doesn't matter if the current system sees them or not. I realized I was trapped in a mental prison cell of my own making.
“I’ve shackled myself. The bird in a cage, door open. It's ok!”
The shackles weren't the job itself. They were the belief that I needed this "survival mode" income to be safe. They were the belief that I needed to finish an apprenticeship I’ve already outgrown just to be "validated."
But then I remembered: "My roots are strong." My roots aren't in this office. My roots are in the businesses I’ve built and the infectious knowledge that people like Tony Lacey and Jules have seen in me, even when my own management couldn't.
The Human Systems Architecture
I am no longer a Careers Adviser. I am a **Senior Software Architect of Human Systems.** I see the "glitch" in the matrix. I see how the government ignores the psychology of the "common man" for the sake of a spreadsheet. I see why 70% of us are stressed out—because we are being forced into systems that aren't designed for human flourishing.
The New Blueprint
I have an Islamic wedding dinner on June 1st. I’ve set that as my milestone. By the time I sit at that table, I won't be the woman "fuming" about the system. I will be the woman who reclaimed her time.
My plan is simple, or as I wrote: "The one with least resistance."
Change the Environment: I need to get into the garden, not just the house. I need the air.
Write the Truth: This Substack is my exorcism. Consistency isn't the goal; truth is.
Build the Asset: I am done selling my hours for a pittance. I am building digital blueprints to help others find their own "open cage door."
To anyone else sitting in a "5/10" office feeling like you’re losing your mind: You aren't "too much." You are just too big for the room.
It’s time to stop trying to fix the cage and just walk through the door.
